    Since 1997 the GI expert group “Simulation in environmental and geosciences” and the GI-ASIM expert group “Simulation in environmental science, geology, medicine and biology” (SUGMB) have been held the annual workshop “Modelling and Simulation of Ecosystems” in the seaside resort Kölpinsee / Usedom Island in order to promote and develop modelling and simulation in theory and practice as well as simulation applications in ecology, environmental and spatial planning further. This book documents the revised contributions to the 19th Workshop “Modelling and Simulation of Ecosystems” in 2015. This workshop was the last one that could take place in the hotel “Zur Ostsee” in seaside resort Kölpinsee.

    The need to protect tropical and sub-tropical forests from degradation and deforestation finds wide, societal agreement. In the past, miscellaneous initiatives were launched to protect tropical natural forests from depletion. Among those initiatives are the definition of standards for sustainable forest management (SFM), certification, boycott of tropical timber, forest law enforcement, or abatement of illegal logging. Despite these initiatives, the global forest area decreased by almost 400 million hectares from 1948 to 2010. According to FAO, 5.1 million hectares (or 51100 km2) of forest were lost annually in the period from 2000 to 2010, most of which are located in the tropics. Deforestation and forest degradation occur as a result of direct or proximate causes (e.g., human activities and actions) which are generally underpinned by several other indirect or underlying causes.     The study thus fill the gap of inadequate information on environmental condition and human induced change in land cover types which is essential for proper land use management, vegetation monitoring and early warning measure for desertification. Osunmadewa Babatunde Adeniyi (born in 1976) obtained his BSc at the Department of Forestry and Wildlife, Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, Nigeria, in 2004 where he also worked as graduate fellow in 2006. He completed his MSc in 2010 and earned a doctoral degree (Dr. rer. nat) in 2017 at the Faculty of Environmental Sciences, Technische Universität Dresden (TUD), Germany. Currently, he is working on a project as research associate under the research group of remote sensing at TUD. He has professional experience in the fields of remote sensing and GIS, environmental impact assessment, desertification monitoring and data mining.
